Diversion of Initial Blood Flow to Prevent Contamination of Blood Cultures (US patent 6,913,580)

The Clean CollectTM  Blood Collection System uses a patented method that diverts initial blood flow to prevent contamination of blood cultures with bacteria from the skin. This unique method has the potential to reduce contamination rates by 75 -  90% for most hospitals when combined with topical antiseptics and proper training of blood collectors.

Clinical trials on diversion of initial blood flow are underway and in the next year complete data from tens of thousands of blood cultures will determine exactly how far Clean Collect can reduce blood culture contamination rates.

The technical objective of Clean Collect is to reduce contamination rates to less than 1%. This benefits patients by preventing unnecessary treatment and provides physicians with a more reliable diagnostic test for septicemia. The cost reduction for hospitals ranges from $3.2 million - $18.8 million each year.
